If you’re new to making THC gummies, perhaps the most difficult part is learning how to extract the Tetrahydrocannabinol content from a cannabis flower to use in the gummy formulation.  Other than that small learning curve, it won’t matter if you’re an experienced cannabis chef or if you’re making cannabis-infused gummies for the first time , I got you covered!

I’m going to show you how to make weed gummies in the easiest way possible with clear, step-by-step instructions so that literally anyone can do it themselves.

Let’s get started!

The Process for Making THC Gummies at Home

Making THC gummies at home can be surprisingly simple if you have the right tools, supplies, and ingredients. Further, it will be even easier with the help of a few cannabis product innovations that really speed things along for the people who like DIY projects and want to extract THC from their home instead of buying it from a distributor.

Fast Fact: The process of making CBD gummies is almost identical to making THC gummies, with the only differences being the decarb temperature that you’ll want to use Hemp flower instead of a marijuana flower because it has much higher CBD content to help you easily create high-potency CBD gummies.

Without further adieu, see the list of everything you need below with a few optional upgrades I’ve added in case you want to take the entire homemade THC-infused gummies process to the next level.

List Of Supplies, Tools, & Equipment

  • a saucepan

  • baking sheet or parchment paper

  • measuring spoons

  • silicone gummy molds (avoid gummy bear molds — Read our THC Gummy Bears article to find out why)

  • 1-2 ml calibrated dropper for easy measuring/dispensing of your THC extract

  • Optional: CannaGenie, Double Boiler

List Of Ingredients For The Gummy Recipe

  • Canna Oil (Cannabis-infused coconut oil or Cannabis-infused MCT oil)
NOTE: This needs to be purchased from a licensed and legal dispensary. If recreational or medical marijuana is not readily available, you’ll have to substitute it with high-THC flower and you will need to learn the “How To Decarb Weed” process in order to make your own Cannabis-infused oils.

  • Flavored gelatin or unflavored gelatin, fruit pectin, or agar agar powder

  • Cold Water, flavored juice

  • Jello mix

  • citric acid (preservative)

  • soy lecithin or sunflower lecithin (emulsifiers & used as a substitute for corn syrup)

  • Optional: mct oil (used for oil THC extraction

Step 1: Decarb Your Cannabis Buds

Decarboxylating your Cannabis flowers or buds will help you achieve maximum THC edible potency which will lead to a much more effective cannabis-infused edibles and weed gummies. Decarboxylation is a vital step you must complete if you care about making high-quality Cannabis gummies.

Basically, cannabis buds have high amounts of THCA, but we want THC. Thus, the decarb process is the removal of the acid molecule from THCA, and turning it into THC, by applying heat.

Simply, the benefits of decarbonization is that it makes the THC extract more bioavailable. By decarbing, you’re able to unlock a lot more of the chemical compounds for easier consumption by removing the acid molecule, and activating the more bioavailable cannabinoid.

How To Decarb Weed

Here is a basic step-by-step overview on how to decarb weed.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary supplies. You will need an oven, parchment paper or aluminum foil, a baking sheet or pan, and your chosen strain of cannabis buds. Make sure your oven is preheated to 240 degrees Fahrenheit before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Preparing Your Cannabis

Once your oven is preheated and ready to go, you can begin preparing your cannabis for decarboxylation. Start by breaking down the buds into small pieces with your hands or using a grinder.

The smaller pieces will ensure even heat distribution throughout the entire process—which is key for optimal decarbing results! Next, spread out the ground bud onto a baking sheet or pan lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil.

This will help prevent sticking and burning during the decarbing process.

Step 3: Decarb Your Cannabis

Now it’s time to put your cannabis in the oven. Place your baking sheet in the middle rack of your preheated oven and set a timer for 30 minutes (or longer if needed).

Make sure not to overcrowd your baking sheet as this can cause uneven heat distribution and ineffective decarbing results. When finished, let cool for about 10 minutes before handling with caution—the contents may still be hot!

Once cooled off, you should now have activated THC/CBD ready for use!

Step 2: Extract THC From Your Newly Decarbed Cannabis Flowers (Two Methods)

The two easiest ways you can obtain your THC extract is by either completing an Ethanol THC Extraction or by making Cannabutter!

Method 1 – Ethanol THC Extraction

This process extracts the cannabinoids, including THC, from the plant matter itself. This can be done through various methods, but today we’ll focus on the basics of extraction and we will use my favorite method, ethanol extraction.

Ethanol is a safe and a very effective way to get a broad spectrum THC extract from home, but we’re hoping for a full spectrum THC extract.

The Equipment Needed

The main piece of equipment you’ll need for this process is an extraction vessel. This can be anything from a mason jar to a vacuum chamber, depending on your budget and preferences. Make sure that whatever vessel you choose is made from food-grade materials and free of any contaminants or chemicals that could alter your end product.

Next, you’ll need some type of filtration system to separate the solids from the liquid after your extraction is complete. A cheesecloth should do the trick if you don’t have access to more specialized equipment, but something like a coffee filter may work better for smaller batches.

Finally, make sure you have enough ethanol on hand for your extraction—you will need about one liter per pound of cannabis flower or trim (or 1/2 liter per gram).

Cannabinoid (THC) Extraction Equipment You Can Buy Online

If you decide to do it yourself, there are economical household tools and machines that you can buy and use to automate the THC-extraction and infusion process.

The Process

Once all your equipment is gathered, you can begin the actual extraction process! Start by grinding up your cannabis material into a fine powder or “shake.” Place this powder into your extraction vessel and cover it with ethanol until it’s completely submerged in liquid. Stir gently for two minutes to ensure that all solids are saturated with ethanol before sealing off the vessel and allowing it to sit overnight (or at least 8 hours).

The next morning, open up the vessel and pour out any remaining liquid into a collection container. Take care not to spill any of the contents onto yourself or nearby surfaces as ethanol is highly flammable!

With the liquid now separated from its solids, use your filtration system to strain out any remaining particles before discarding them and letting the liquid evaporate naturally in an open space away from direct sunlight (this can take anywhere from 24-72 hours).

Once all traces of ethanol have dissipated, what remains should be a thick oil containing high levels of THC!

Method 2 – THC Extraction With Cannabutter

Another way you can extract THC from cannabis is by making cannabutter—a type of butter infused with marijuana. To make cannabutter, follow these steps:

  1. melt one cup of unsalted butter in a saucepan over low heat

  2. add 10 grams of ground decarboxylated cannabis buds to it.

  3. Simmer for about three hours while stirring regularly so that it doesn’t burn.

  4. Once done simmering, strain the mixture into an airtight container using cheesecloth or another type of fine strainer and refrigerate overnight.

  5. The next morning, remove any hardened butter from the top and discard it; what’s left is pure cannabutter which can then be used to make all types of cannabis edibles like weed cookies and pot brownies!

Step 3: Mixing in Cannabis Extract & Filling Molds

Now it’s time to add your cannabis extract into the mixture. Make sure you stir slowly but continuously. Stirring too fast creates bubbles in the jello; no bueno señores y señoras.

Once everything is evenly distributed, pour your cannabis-infused gelatin mixture into your pre-bought silicone gummy molds and place in the refrigerator until your marijuana or hemp gummies are firm. Depending on the accuracy of your formulation, this can take 30 minutes up to 3 hours,

Your homemade edible gummies are now ready for consumption! Enjoy responsibly!

Don’t do anything illegal. Don’t make marijuana gummies at home if you’re state doesn’t allow it. If they don’t, you can easily substitute marijuana THC gummies for industrial hemp-derived THC gummies. Happy Munchies!
